We're staying busy over here--and enjoying every minute of it! My dad has spent the past month with us in Raleigh. It's been a joy and such a blessing to have him here. We've accomplished much around the house {& if I didn't leave my camera in Michigan I would have pictures to prove it!}

Mom, It's been three weeks since you left this earth and went home to be with Jesus. Some nights I find myself dreaming of what heaven is like and what you're doing. I hope heaven has a porch--a huge white wrap around porch--with glorious rocking chairs. If so, you're probably sitting in a rocking chair next to Jim's mom, loving on babies and enjoying a cup of coffee. I can only imagine the encompassing smile that graces your face doing so. Or, maybe there's a party tonight and you're laughing and dancing with Amy's dad and Kristin's dad. If so, I can only imagine the joy you're experiencing and your new found dance moves. Or, maybe you're talking with grandpa and embracing him in a hug that you've longed to do for so long. We're rejoicing that you're healed, but hurting so bad that you're no longer here. I miss you, Mom....I miss and love you so much.

I long for the day we're reunited.

We went camping in the mountains for four days. Just the two of us.

We spent our days hiking and our nights around the campfire-fingers sticky with the

remnants of roasted marshmallows and chocolate and doughboys and crumbs of graham crackers.

We cooked over the fire and celebrated life with oberon in hand.

We walked through downtown Blowing Rock.

Sat at the park {got ice cream} and watched life go by.

We simply enjoyed the presence of life with one another and the great outdoors.

It was good for our souls & for our marriage.

life was simple & filled with thoughtful conversation and laughter.

it was the perfect vacation, indeed.

It's been four incredible years.

As we celebrated our anniversary last night,

we reflected on life....

...how far we've come,

and how different our lives are now.

We laughed {a lot} as we reflected on each of the past four years--the good, the bad and the unique challenges each one brought.

We've learned so much--

and despite the changes, one thing remains forever true....

we're a pretty sweet team.

we went out for dinner.

and on a walk.

and bought incredible desserts.

and came home to enjoy them.

AND, did you know the the "traditional" anniversary gift for 4 years is fruit?!

We just returned from a trip to Michigan. The trip began unlike any other as we left a few days earlier than planned when we heard that Emily's mom was headed to the ER. We packed in 10 minutes and were then on the road. It was a long 13 1/2 hour drive and the pouring rain didn't help. To be completely honest, we didn't know what to expect. But I'm quite sure we (at least I) didn't expect to be where we are right now. Emily's mom is doing much better and the family is once again in awe of the healing power of our God and amazed at the power that prayer truly has. While Emily's mom is still in the hospital, we are praising God for where we stand today!

With that being said, you can imagine that a majority of our trip was spent in the hospital. We played countless rounds of the card game Golf. We talked, laughed, cried, played, ate way too much cafeteria food (you would have thought we actually liked the way it tasted), we drank gallons of crappy coffee (I'm not trying to be rude, but the nurses affectionately called it Gut-Rot). We also had the opportunity to realize the importance of life and how lucky we are to have such a great family (both sides) and friends.

You may wonder, after reading the first couple of paragraphs, why I titled this blog Celebration. Well for starters, with the amazing progress in Emily's mom's health, we CELEBRATED life in and of itself.

We CELEBRATED multiple birthdays. One family get-together was held to celebrate 5 birthdays (mine, my brother and sister-in-law's birthdays-they share the same birthday - crazy, my sister's birthday, and her boyfriend's birthday) that all happened (or will happen) from the first of March to the end of April. Emily even got in the action, even though her birthday was a few months prior.

We CELEBRATED Sarah's, Emily's younger sister's, birthday in the hospital cafeteria. We overtook one corner of the cafeteria and promptly started the celebration - complete with balloons, presents, homemade lasanga, Costco cake, friends, and even mom was able to partake.

We also CELEBRATED with Scott and Sarah at their wedding. It was a great time of reuniting with friends and just letting loose (emily more so than me... but the Killian's helped me out a little bit).

And of course, we CELEBRATED in the fact that we could spend some quality time with Evan and Truett, we are blessed to be able to call them our nephews!

We even woke up to snow the second to last day and we CELEBRATED.... we celebrated that we would soon be leaving to come back to 85 degree weather.

So, looking back, this trip was not at all what we anticipated when we made plans for it a few months ago, but it truly turned into a trip full of CELEBRATIONS!

So, it has been quite some time since the last post, my apologies. Life has been busy lately.

However, this past weekend was great. Emily actually had the entire weekend off - crazy! We tried our best to make the most of it. As persuaded by the nice weather, we did some early "spring" cleaning. We attacked our master closet and began a donation to GCF pile - which quickly grew into a mountain. We also began clearing out the soon-to-be-nursery which has been used mostly as a big closet for the past year. It feels good to have all that stuff cleared out of our house!

With temps in the 60's we also spent some time outside taking a long walk through the neighborhood, doing some yard work, oh, and one more thing - we played CATCH, with a baseball!! It was great, seriously, it was great. I felt like a little annoying friend as I kept begging Emily all day to play catch with me... she finally caved - and I think she had a good time, she made a lot of progress.

I'm just saying... she made some SERIOUS progress. This could be a great summer (if she puts up with my nagging, or rather, gives in to my nagging).

We also went out with our great friends, Andy & Amy, Saturday night for some good Italian food and some shopping at one of the outdoor malls in the area. It is always a great time whenever we get together.

Going back a few days, I experienced my first ever lockdown at school. It was a "Code Yellow" lockdown, which means there is a threat in the area around the school (not inside the school). Nobody was allowed in the school, and nobody was allowed out. And of course this happened 5 minutes before dismissal was to start. We ended up finally getting the OK to start dismissing kids from school just before 5:00pm. The lockdown happened because of a bank robbery/hostage situation taking place 3-4 miles down the road. Pretty crazy (kids can get pretty antsy when they are required to stay at school for longer than a normal school day, well, TEACHERS too for that matter).

Too bad tomorrow has to be Monday already, here's to another week!

It is so sweet for my soul to be surrounded by family and friends,

and this trip home was no different.

There is something so sweet about going back to our roots. maybe it has something to do with the comfort, security and memories of our past and dreams for our future.

Whatever the reason, being back in GR brought us great joy.

We spent countless hours laughing, catching up, reading to our ridiculously adorable nephews and snuggling with them, and just "being" with those we love.

Our Christmas was simple.

it was sweet.

laid back.

and meaningful.

full of tradition

and friends,

good food,

and memories.

We started the day sitting around the fire..

on the laptop.

pondering that magical day, so long ago...

we devoured homemade cinnamon globs [more on that later...]

and drank mimosas.

We had lunch with dear friends,

and came home in time for a nap & a movie.

We woke up the next morning to a winter wonderland.

7-8 inches of snow fell overnight and throughout the day.

We spent the day wrapped up in blankets "fishing" and "duck hunting" on the wii.

We laid low and enjoyed time off, together.

Although there is nothing like being home for the holidays,

we rejoice in our "family" here.

Our quaint Christmas was a nice change of pace,

and during this busy season,

it's just what we needed.

We eagerly await our trip to MI next week,

to celebrate and reunite with those we love.

Counting down the minutes till I can wrap my arms around my nephews,

smoother my family with love,

and see our dear friends.

Yesterday was an amazing day.

I finally got back to the gym after a time away, spent the day with K, my 18th month old little buddy, went for a walk and enjoyed a day off from work!

AND, last night...

There is a couple that we've become quite close with.

They are from the midwest [chicago to be exact]

Shannon works at the same school as Jim.

They're hilarious.

and they love our dog..

December two is Shannon's birthday as well.

The guys planned a surprise hurrah for us.

It was a riot!

A countdown till Thanksgiving...and today I'm particularly thankful for our family!

we're so blessed.

I'm thankful for video chats and opportunities to see my nephews grow, while being over 700 miles away.

weekly, if not daily.

I'm GRATEFUL for the support of our parents.

Saturday, we went on an amazing bike ride through Umstead State park.

Fall Lovin'

It's officially my favorite season...and it's finally feeling like fall in Raleigh! The air was crisp tonight. Jeans and long sleeves were worn [with flop flips, of course!] The 7 day forecast shows temperatures in the low 70s and sunny. The air is off, windows open, apple cider scented candles burning....oh, welcome back fall! After a scorching summer, it's a beautiful thing...

The farmer's market is my favorite this time of year and that's were we started off on this Saturday morning [pumpkin spiced coffee in hand!]

We bought mums. sweet potatoes. and apples grown in the mountains of NC.

We spent the afternoon and evening with our good friends, John, Kristin & Josiah. We did a shopping at the little outlet mall, then found a local sports bar and watched the Michigan football game! It was a blessing to reunite with dear friends and cheer on our faithful home team to a victory over Indiana.

When I arrived home yesterday after babysitting, an intricate part of me was missing from our driveway.

A sigh of relief.

She was my first love.

I have so many memories with that spunky little car, the night I drove my dear friend Becky to the ER in college for kidney stones [during a Michigan ice storm in April], driving to Calvin hockey games, road trips to Pennsylvania, Chicago, Detroit and North Carolina, getting lost downtown Grand Rapids during my early years working at the hospital, the constant battle of the engine light [that to this day hasn't gone off], the proud moment I became her owner and immediately purchased a Hawaiian leis air freshener, oh and the list goes on...

She treated me well.

and so, the night before her departure....we said our farewells.

Jim wrapped up his last days at Green Hope Elementary the end of June.

A bittersweet ending, indeed.

He had stolen the hearts of many.

They called him, Mr. HapENer.

The girls had a crush.

He received the sweetest and most thoughtful notes and gifts of appreciation.

Left for Panama City on Sunday with our church's high school youth group.

...and I'm in NC working all week, bragging on the man I married.

Welcome back Spring!

Yesterday was a perfect way to welcome back Spring.

Earlier in the week, we had originally thought about going to the IKEA, in Charlotte, with John and Kristin. However, when we all saw the forecast for Saturday we reconsidered. With a forecasted high of 81 degrees in Raleigh we decided spending the day driving to and from Charlotte was no longer a good idea. The plan then changed to have them come up here Saturday afternoon/evening to hang out and grill out and enjoy the great weather.

The day started off early as Emily and I had a lot on the to-do list for the day. I spent about 3 1/2 hours in the backyard raking, cutting branches, and destroying weeds and ivy and trying to get our yard back into shape. Emily joined me when she returned from the flea market. We live next to a creek and apparently that is were the previous homeowners/renters just dumped anything from leaves, branches, a football, a towel, and some rather large logs (from a tree they obviously cut down... because the stump is still in the ground).

(The section in the parenthesis is just a story that makes me laugh every time I tell it, so bear with me as I take a detour from my main story---I guess this dumping ground was also open to the neighbors in the past as I met one of our neighbors as he was dumping his yard waste in our backyard, on the creek bed-- which is still on our property. Our meeting went something like this: I notice, as I'm cleaning the grill, a man walking, from two houses down, through our neighbor's yard and then our yard straight to the creek. The man proceeds to dump his branches on the bank of the creek. Me: Sir, do you realize where you are dumping your branches is still my property? Neighbor: This right here is your property... into the creek? Me: Actually, yes it is still our property if you look down into the creek area you'll see a pink flag which marks the edge of our property. Neighbor: Yeah, that one right there (pointing the pink flag that marks the back of our yard- not the flag that marks the edge of our property in the creek bed). Me: No, that one marks the back of our property line... look into the creek and you'll see a pink flag that marks the edge of our property. Neighbor: THAT RIGHT THERE?!? (pointing to the correct flag this time) Me: yeah that one Neighbor: Oh, I always thought this was neutral ground... sorry about that, I really didn't know. Me: muttering to myself... wow, this is awkward. The conversation continued and we ended up talking for like 5 minutes... he's a nice guy. His name is Tyrone. Then he went home... with his branches).

Okay, fast forward back to this weekend...

We then ran a few errands and finished cleaning some things up before our guests were due to arrive.

John and Kristin got to our house around 5:00pm and we spent some time catching up and preparing dinner. A quick glimpse into the menu: Beer Brats, hamburgers, marinated chicken, homemade fries and sweet potato fries, grilled pineapple, raw veggies, avocado topping for the burgers, key lime pie, Labatts, Trader Joe's version of Corona, and some apple cider beer. Phenomenal! We spent the next couple of hours on the deck grilling and eating, and in the backyard-playing cornhole. It was an amazing night of food, fun, and fellowship with great friends. I couldn't have asked for a better "first day of spring." We even played a little euchre before they headed home for the night. (Thanks Germanceris for making the trip up, we had a great time!)

Today was spent going to church, doing more yard work, doing some crafty related activities (emily was doing that), and a few little tasks inside the house.

What a great weekend! Between Friday afternoon and Sunday evening, we spent about 8 hours outside working in the yard doing clean-up. We have filled 25 bags (39-gallon capacity bags) with yard waste and can't wait for them to be picked up! Even with all that work done, we have a ton more to do in the backyard...

Oh and one more thing... I got sunburned (sun burnt, sunburn... i don't know... my skin was burned by the sun) yesterday. love it.

4. it was 63 sunny and amazing here today! yesterday was just as great. it's refreshing to get back outside.

6. jim has an interview thursday at another year-around school.
7. this weekend has been incredible [and much needed.]
8. i hate doing laundry, but i bought 8 bottles of laundry detergent today.
9. we heart the olympics, minus ice dancing.
10. we're off to watch a movie...

Numerous times during this past month I have felt weighed down by heartaches of this world. For a friend, who is 16 weeks pregnant, and her husband, who was diagnosed with cancer, babies who will never know this side of heaven, for grieving parents, for a dear friend who is pregnant and her husband spent the last 3 months in Afghanistan, for broken relationships, for the devastation of the earthquake in Haiti, and the list goes on...

What an opportune time to study the book of Ruth at church....for the reminder that God is at work even in our darkness times.

We have seen his goodness. We are rejoicing that Jason's cancer hasn't spread into his organs and/or brain. John is returning HOME from Afghanistan tonight! Despite the devastation in Haiti, Ellie is HOME [in Grand Rapids] with Jayne, and numerous other Haitian children were released to their adoptive families-some who have been waiting years.

We have so much to be grateful for.
So many prayers have been answered and we've been blessed beyond what we deserve.

Happy New Year!

Here's to a random post of goodness, by yours truly.

My parents & Sar have come and gone. We played a lot of games. Ate a lot of sweets. Shopped till [some of us] dropped. Made pizza. Drank beer. Worked on house projects. and all.in.all...had a good time.

Jim started back to school after a two week break. He has 8 more days of teaching before he tracks out for 3 weeks.

We have a threat of snow tonight. Wake County has already posted a two-hour delay for schools tomorrow. awesome.

I have 5 days off of work randomly. I love working three [long] days a week. At last, the house will be cleaned, laundry done [maybe] and the fridge restocked.

WE'RE COMING HOME THE END OF THIS MONTH! [we leave in 19 days ...but, who's counting?!?! ok. we are. we can't wait.]

We went to our favorite hole-in-the wall Mexican restaurant tonight.
so. good.

We wrote our New Years Resolutions on our kitchen wall...and somehow movie quotes and news headlines appeared as well. [perhaps we will use it as motivation to paint our kitchen sooner rather than later!]

We're getting closer to moving...[Nov. 21 is the big day!]
Our lives are a bit chaotic.
We still haven't unpacked from our trip to the mountains last month...
I'm in the midst of the an insane amount of laundry. Perhaps the most I've ever personally experienced.

However....

the dishes are done and we're leaving town for the weekend to go on a youth retreat..
and that makes my heart happy.
I get to escape this mess for a few more days.

Procrastination is a beautiful thing.

it's time, my friends. It feels like we've been on the go constantly over the last few months. I've been working almost every Saturday since the start of summer [by choice], but it has left us with very little time off together. Jim's last day is Friday. He's off for 3 weeks. 2 more days of work for me and than I'm off for 9 days.

Pure bliss.

And, did I mention we have a visitor coming on Saturday!?!

We're ready for a vacation! 7 more days...

What a week! As Jim is wrapping up his second to last week before track-out, the meetings are out of control and the stress level is rising! However, you would never be able to tell...he hides his emotions well. I don't. Can you say...hormones;)

On Wednesday I represented Calvin at a local college fair. It was a riot. I think if I ever need a change from nursing, I would consider an admissions counselor position. Good times.

Last night we volunteered for World Vision at the Todd Agnew and Building 429 concert. What an awesome experience! We helped people sign up to sponsor kids who live in communities affected by AIDS. It was a great concert and a powerful reminder that the world is so much bigger than us. Seeing the photos of hundreds of children who are living in poverty in an AIDS-stricken land truly puts our needs, wants, and stresses into perspective.

World Vision is doing incredible things...and it was a honor to represent them last night!

Speaking of Word Vision, this Sunday my Uncle Tim [Hoekstra] is running 23.8 miles to the start of the Chicago Marathon and then running the 26.2 miles of the marathon itself [50 miles total] He is running with "Team World Vision". His goal is to raise 5o,000 dollars for clean water in Africa and for a new runners/walkers mentoring program in Chicago. He's celebrating 50 years of life, running 50 miles, raising 50K. Prayers are appreciated as he embarks on this journey. Uncle Tim, we'll be cheering you on from Raleigh! We wish we could be there! fall lovin'

I love October...a month which routine sets in after a crazy September, football games, cooler weather, and this year....visitors! This is going to be a great month, indeed.

I had the past weekend off, which was amazing. Saturday we went to the farmer's market, went hiking at Umstead, went on a few walks, went out for lunch and crossed off numerous items on the infamous "to-do" list. It was an accomplished day, and it felt great.

Today, Jim's Aunt Pat & Uncle Bob were passing through Raleigh, so we spent the day showing them around the area. We visited our new house, Jim's school, my hospital, Duke's gardens and chapel. They are some of our favorite people & it was a great to spend time with them. We miss our families greatly and truly treasure our times together. It was great to have them visit our stomping grounds, too!

Kristin, Jim's sister will be here in less than two weeks! We're counting down the days. We become homeowners on the 19th [crazy!] and then we'll join Rick, Julie and Evan in the mountains on the 21st.

ah, yes.
life is great. and crazy. and busy.

What a week

The picture from yesterday afternoon explains it all. Emily had a busy couple of days at work to finish off the week which left her exhausted. Bentley, well he's just a follower, especially on Sunday afternoons. I, on the other hand, decided to watch some football and do some reading (hence the "The Lost Symbol" in the chair).
The book is great - another book that has kept me, the non-reader, engaged. Thank you Dan Brown. I got on the waiting list for this book 2 months before it came out at the library (yes I was actually on a waiting list for a book). I was number 250 on the list even at that point! The waiting list right now is at 1,125! It is only a one week check out though, so I have been up late every night reading.

My week was filled with a couple last-minute IEP meetings, a couple tutoring sessions, leading the middle school boy's Bible study, and report cards. Tiresome.

It was a pretty exhausting week for us around here to say the least.

Today is the first day of FALL!
Despite the torrential rainfall and warm temps...
i celebrated the start of my favorite season.

and here's how....

1. hot apple spice @ Starbucks
2. my "mulled cider" candle burned as I "fall" cleaned.
3. I made homemade cinnamon bread and topped it off with pumpkin butter
3. We baked Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookies-delicious!

Here's the recipe. I highly recommend them!

2 cups flour
1 1/3 cups rolled oats
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1 2/3 cups sugar
2/3 cup canola oil
2 tablespoons molasses [or maple syrup or brown sugar]
1 cup canned pumpkin or cooked pureed pumpkin
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon ground flax seed

1 cup walnuts, finely chopped
1/2 cup chocolate chunks [or chocolate chips or raisins]

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350.
Mix together flour, oats, baking soda, salt and spices.
In a separate bowl, mix together sugar, oil, molasses, pumpkin and vanilla and flax seeds until very well combined. Add dry ingredients-folding to combine. Fold in walnuts and chocolate.

Drop by tablespoons onto greased cookie sheets. They don't spread very much so they can be placed only an inch apart. Flatten the tops of the cookies with a fork or fingers-to press into cookie shape. Bake for 16 minutes at 350.

When life gives you lemons....

Here's the good, the bad, and humorous details of our life the last few weeks!

We did nursery this past Sunday. Jim was the "child whisperer".
and he got peed on.
and we had a good laugh.

We were "under contract" on a house here in Raleigh! ...until today. The seller wanted out and was making our lives miserable. She got her way. And we're excited not to have to deal with her for the next two months....now praying another house turns up in time to close before Dec. 1.

We are going to the mountains with Jim's siblings & nephew this fall-and we're so excited! Plans are underway...[just think: a quaint cabin, Blue Ridge Mountains, bonfires, apple cider & hiking: that, my friends makes my heart happy]

Fall is in the air...and I LOVE IT. by far my favorite season. We slept with the windows open multiple times last week...the best sleep we have had since the king size bed in Michigan:)

Labor Day -- Chik-fil-A: free chicken sandwiches if you wore some team spirit. We met up with the Wood family and proudly displayed our Michigan and Calvin pride! ...and enjoyed a free lunch. Awesome. (edited at a later time... by Jim. I may have gotten a total of 4 free sandwiches throughout the day. no big deal.)

Phew. I think that's the latest and greatest. We hope all is well with you, our faithful reader[MOM] .

Eight days

A full eight days of quality time with family and friends.

The trip to Michigan was great, what else can I say. Our first trip back to Michigan in a long time without any real reason besides just to visit, left almost all of our days open. Our agenda for the week was rather flexible which allowed for many last minute activities or adventures for which we were grateful.

Whether it was a softball game, a family dinner, ultimate frisbee night, a rather large garage sale, tubing down a river, golfing, driving your nephew around on the tractor (the saving grace for my relationship with Little E), playing corn-hole, badminton, a traditional game of wiffle ball in the backyard, a cookout with friends, a bonfire at Rick and Julie's (and jokes-especially really, really, REALLY long jokes), roofing a chicken coop, Real Food Cafe for breakfast, Red Geranium for breakfast, going out for coffee or lunch, Housemans ice cream, crystal cone ice cream, Housemans ice cream again, the Tigers game (phenominal), or a Sarah-made pancake breakfast the morning we headed back to NC (Sarah, you making us breakfast food is turning in to some sort of tradition, and I like it), we thoroughly enjoyed the time that our friends and family took from their schedules to spend time with us (or put us to work)!

That is an extremely condensed version of the trip, and there would be pictures.... BUT or camera no longer feels like opening. awesome.

I am now in my 2nd week of the new school year, and after 2 years I finally have my OWN room! No more sharing a normal size classroom with 2 females teachers, a female Teacher's Assistant and 2, yes 2, female student teachers (for this past year)! I couldn't be happier about the move. I can now be loud, move around, and play music before and after school at my own discretion without distracting anyone but myself.

My schedule is quite a bit different this year than the past couple of years. I have 2 kindergartners on my case load. So my case load now spans every grade level K-5... weird.

I am pushing-in to the Kindergarten class for the 2 students because it quite beneficial for them to be apart of the first classroom experience. Both of the students have concerns with social interactions with peers and adults, so part of my time in their class spans their recess time. sweet.

I was a little hesitant going into the kindergarten class the first day, as I am not used to working with such youngsters. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to survive with a bunch of 5 year olds.

I sat next to one of my students during her snack time and we started to have a simple conversation. It then turned into a discussion with the entire table of 4 students.

It all started with another girl at the table having apple sauce for snack, and I said " mm, applesauce, that is a good snack."
It then turned into a 3 person conversation between the two boys at the table and myself... the girls did not participate in this one.

Boy 1: "Do you like applesauce?"
Me: "Yes, I really like applesauce."
Boy 1: "Have you ever had apple juice?"
enter boy 2: Boy 2: "Apple juice is good..."
Me: "Yes I have."
Boy 1: "What about orange juice?"
Boy 2: "grape juice is good, I love grape juice!"
Me: Yes, I have had orange juice, it's good."
Boy 2: "Have you ever had grape juice?"
Boy 1: "Yeah grape juice, have you ever had grape juice?"
Me: "Yes, I have had grape juice, and you're right... it is good."
Boy 1: "What about pomagamet juice (pomegranate), have you had that?
Me: "yes, but not very much, it is a new juice to me."
chewing on his muffin: Boy 2: "mmmhmm, yeah"
Boy 1: "What about pear juice?"
Me: "You know what, I don't think I have had pear juice before."
Boy 1: "Oh, pear juice keeps your poopies strong in case you eat too much cheese."
choking back laughter: Me: "Okay then."

Yup, I think I will do just fine in the kindergarten after all.

Weekend recap.

This past weekend we joined Val & Alan Musch in Kentucky for a weekend of camping. With two puppies and tents we knew we were in for quite the adventure., However, what we didn't plan for was rain...and lots of it! Thankfully we found a picnic shelter that became our "home" on Sunday. We played our fair share of euchre, beans, settlers and phase 10. The sun came out just in time for us to pack up and make the 7 hour drive home on Monday.

Although the weather wasn't ideal, we were reminded how much we love the great outdoors. We fell asleep to rain falling on our tent, we were able to have two campfires [despite the rain] did a little hiking, and spent quality time with friends we miss greatly!

Field Day

Finally, field day came! It has been the talk of the school this past week (yes I am still in school for those of you teacher readers out there enjoying your summer break right now).

As the time drew near for the afternoon segment to start (for the 3rd-5th grade students), I decided it was time to change. I quickly threw on my swimsuit and a t-shirt and made my way out to the playground. You may ask yourself... why the swimsuit? I was going to be in the dunk tank, that's why. A couple other teachers were all dressed and ready to go in when I got out there, so I decided to make my way to the gym and play some basketball and check out the inflatable obstacle courses before I was soaked for the rest of the day. I played a couple games of one-on-one and one-on-two which quickly became one-on-three. Then I walked around checking out the different stations... did a couple Hulas(??) at the hula hoop station, signed a few kids' shirts at the shirt signing station, and passed by many others. I then came to the test your speed baseball throw. Obviously, I got in line. Somehow kids kept going in front of me thinking I was just watching. Then finally Mr. Denman (a 3rd grade teacher), seeing what was going on walked past the 4 or 5 kids that cut in front of me and gave me the 3 cloth-like baseballs. All the kids turned reaching out their hands for the baseballs as Mr. Denman walked past them thinking he didn't see them. Once they saw him give me the "baseballs" they quickly cleared out of the way and became a cheering section, and I got ready to throw my arm out. I think the gun might have been a little tempermental, as my three throws (which all felt equally thrown in my mind) rang in at 19, 60, and 80mph. I heard my record stood all afternoon... no big deal.

Then I headed over to the imfamous dunk tank. Shortly thereafter I got the nod. I climbed up and took my seat where I thought I would last for a little while at least, but to my dismay I went down on the 2nd throw from a 3rd grade girl. The water was actually a nice break from the 95 degree weather and beating sun. I spent about 35-40 minutes in the dunk tank spread between two stints and probably went under about 25-30 times, a couple of those coming thanks to other staff members activating the switch from the back when I truly wasn't expecting it. It is amazing how excited the kids get for the chance to dunk their teacher, and how good of an aim some of the students had. I had another cheering... or maybe more like a jeering section right next to the tank who would laugh at me when I got dunked and then I would spalsh them with water... it was mutual.

3 1/2 days of pure tiredness.

A trip to Michigan for:
-BJ and Courtney's wedding.
-Evan's first birthday party

Things I missed:
-my sister-in-law's high school open house
-my sister-in-law's high school graduation
-BJ & Courtney's wedding rehearsal
-a bonfire at Rick and Julie's... with Kristin (seriously, I miss those)

In addition to all the family events I also had time to play golf with my brother-in-law and all the groomsmen (first time playing in nearly 8 years, and to my dad and brother's surprise... I had a lot fun - so much for "hating" golf), hang out with Little E (he didn't even cry when I was playing with him on the swings and slides on Sunday... the breakthrough is finally coming), see many friends, AND a game of kickball.

As always, it was a great trip to spend time with family and friends. We got a later start back to Raleigh and finally arrived back at the apartment at about 3:00am. I got a few hours of sleep and was then off to school, it made for a long Monday but it was well worth it!

11 days of pure bliss.

A trip to Michigan for:
- my sister's high school graduation & open house
- a bridal shower for Courtney [my new sister-in-law!]
- BJ & Courtney's wedding rehearsal & wedding
- Evan's first birthday party!
- and much, much more!

In addition to all the family events I also had time to visit Ikea [near Detroit] with my sister and her best friend, cuddle with my nephew, see many friends, have a bonfire with my sisters/brother-in-law, AND a game of kickball.

Phew! good times all around. It was tough to say goodbye yesterday [and as usual the tears fell as we started on our 12 hour journey "home"]...

But, it feels good to be back in Raleigh. We pulled in around 3 am this morning and I was so grateful for my bed & pillow that were awaiting me!

Nothing Special

It has been awhile since we posted, but there hasn't been too much going on around here.

I am back to school now, with 6 weeks left to go of this school year, and Emily keeps on delivering those babies.

The Friday before I went back to school, we headed down to Wrightsville Beach for the day. It was a nice day for the beach as the heat wasn't too bad, but the water was freezing. I made myself go in, because who goes to the beach with out going in the water? Not me, I had to get my fix of body surfing.

Life around here is going to be a little different in a couple days as Emily is heading back to Michigan. She flies out early Wednesday morning, and will arrive in MI in time for Sarah's open house that night and graduation the next. I will be staying here for the next week and then driving up to Michigan next Wednesday for BJ and Courtney's wedding. We are looking forward to that. Then, hopefully we'll get to Evan's first birthday party. What a productive trip to Michigan it shall be. Then Emily and I will drive home together on Sunday to be back to work on Monday (at least for me).

Completely aside from that, I have been quite pleased lately with the Detroit sports teams. The Red Wings of course are up one game on the Blackhawks, and I actually got to watch them play yesterday.

The Tigers are finally alone in first place, and have played some great games lately. I must say I think one of the best games I have watched in some time was the Tigers 1-0 win over the Indians on May 8. Being a pitcher and a big fan of "small-ball" baseball this game was nearly perfect. Verlander threw a complete game 2-hitter and Granderson had a phenomenal catch over the wall in the ninth inning to save the game. And to make it even better, in the 8th inning, Clete Thomas ran out (full speed) a routine ground ball to 2nd base and beat out the throw that would have ended the inning, while Granderson scored from third which turned out to be the game winner. It was a great game! Let that be a lesson to every baseball player out there, always run out your hit. Rick, I'm sure you can appreciate that.

We received exciting news last week Wednesday..."Sally" [the recipient of my stem-cells] has been released from the hospital. She is doing great! On day 28 the stem-cells have already engrafted [which means they have made their way to the bone marrow and are producing new cells]. It's crazy and incredible! We're optimistic and hopeful. Continuing to place her life in his hands!

We spent the past week visiting my grandparents in Florida.

Good times!

We spent our days at the pool, watching dolphins & manatee on the sea wall, biking, playing tennis,eating way too much, and catching up on some sleep! We finished books, dominated in Sequence, watched M.A.S.H reruns with Gram & Gramps and devoured multiple key lime pies, brownie sundaes & peanut M&M's!

A perfect vacation, indeed!

Spring is in the air, which means the unwelcomed sight of pollen has once again covered...well, everything! It looks as if God clapped two chalk board erasers over North Carolina, leaving us snot filled and sneezing. [gross, I know...]

We have been blessed by visitors! On Friday Val & Alan Musch arrived and spent the weekend with us before continuing on their journey to Florida. The weather was perfect and we spent our days outside. We also made two runs to Sonic, for happy hour, of course!. We had a picnic lunch on Sunday and Val & I took naps outside while the guys did some hiking/geo-caching. We caught a few rays and endured our first sun tan/burn of the season. It was much needed and warmly welcomed!

Val & Alan left us early Monday morning and off to work we went. Life is back to normal, with a much anticipated trip to Florida in two weeks. Jim's off today for Good Friday, and back to work I went after a three day stretch off.

Life has felt like a whirlwind lately and it's keeping us on our toes!

10 top reasons this weekend was INCREDIBLE.

1. Sarah came to visit!

2. We went to Dos Taquitos, a local Mexican restaurant, and a personal favorite. The food was delicious and the atmosphere and company divine!

3. Sarah did AMAZING in the half marathon on Saturday! She placed 7th in her age group [out of 175 women!] and timed in at 1:43.43. Incredible! We were proud spectators!

4. The rain stopped long enough on Saturday for the race. The temperature was in the low 60's AND, the sun even came out briefly.

5. Sunday was gorgeous [sunny and 80]. We walked through Lake Johnson, found some geo-caches, and went to Sonic for happy hour!

6. We went to Mura-a Japanese restaurant and had SUSHI, for the first time! It was quite an adventure [pictures to follow!]

7. We went to Goodberry's! We stood shivering in line [the wind was brutal] for a ridiculously long time to satisfy our craving for frozen custard. It was well worth it!

8. We played Ticket to Ride AND introduced Sar to the bean game.

9. We made homemade pizza, enjoyed Newton Folly, and devoured brownies.

10. We laughed A LOT.

It was great having you, Sarah! We miss you already [even Bentley. He was looking all over for you when I got back from the airport!]

We’re in the air on our way back to Raleigh. I just dominated in Solitaire [at last!]. So, I thought I would write a few thoughts down regarding the last five days.

I’m not quite where to even begin…the past weeks seems like a complete blur and in some ways it’s hard to believe this adventure is in many ways over.

It was a tough trip…

But, completely worth it.

My cells were transported to the receiving blood center late afternoon on Monday.
“Sally” [we named her] the stem-cell recipient received her transplant either late Monday evening or early Tuesday.

I’m exhausted. Physically and mentally. Life begins again bright and early tomorrow. It’s almost as if we were never gone…

What a whirlwind of an adventure…

One and Done

well the needles were pulled out at 2:30pm.

The morning started early and we were to the blood center by 8:00am. After doing some more tests and getting a couple more shots, Emily was ready to begin at 9:00am. Her cell counts were on the higher side which is what they were hoping for. The first couple hours of the procedure were going well, so I decided to hand the reigns over to mom for a little while so that I could go and donate some blood. When I returned to where Emily was, it was evident that she was not feeling well. As the time went on, the sickness and pain got worse for Emily. The nurses kept a close eye on her, and did whatever they could to help her feel as comfortable as possible. They were surprised by her sickness and pain, as that were not all that common for this procedure. Thank goodness for blankets, cold wraps, pink buckets, pillows and nurses who would do whatever was needed.

No one was more relieved than Emily when they finally announced the procedure was completed. Emily could finally move her body into the comfort of the fetal position. However, even that position didn't prove to help much either. It was a long and draining day (literally and figuratively I guess you could say) for Emily, and we were all glad when we could come home. Emily was still quite sick in the car on the way home, but has since started to feel better. She is on the couch sleeping right now, and hopefully her body will begin to recuperate during the nap.

I apologize for the lack of details, but maybe Emily will post sometime later and let you know how it all went from her perspective (and I'm sure she won't sugar coat it like I just did). All I can tell you is that the procedure was a success and Emily's body did a fantastic job of producing extra cells for today. The nurses and doctor were all quite impressed. As were we!

Thankfully another day is not needed to get the required amount of cells. Well I think that is all I have to say for now. We greatly appreciate all the thoughts and prayers throughout this process.

A few more details...and a plea for prayers

As our trip home quickly approaches, the reality of this experience sets in. Yesterday the woman who will be receiving my stem-cells begun her "pre-transplant" protocol. During this time her immune system will destroyed in hopes that her body will accept my cells. Please pray for continued health for her during this pertinent time.

Thursday I begin getting injections to boost my white blood cell count. The side effects can be undesirable [flu like], yet definitely tolerable [and well worth it] Minimal side effects would be great as well as an INSANE production of stem-cells. that would be awesome.

At last we received our travel itinerary...we should be home Friday night around 9pm. I will receive shots on Saturday and Sunday and then Monday morning @ 8 will begin the collection process.

i am excited for what the next week entails.
i am thankful that needles, blood and bedpans don't bother me.
i am grateful we get to see family and friends.
i am ready!

Jim found a sweet deal on a paper shredder @ Target: originally almost $70: on sale for $18. he currently is shredding every unwanted piece of paper that has accumulated in our apartment [including the Sunday paper] oh, the joy.

So,who did something special for Pi day, today? Come on, I know somebody did something cool...

Emily worked. I did paperwork. Bentley slept.

With 6 IEP meetings to write and hold, a week and a half of lesson plans to accomplish, 3 days of sub plans to write (for our trip to MI), report cards to construct, SST meetings to attend, and and a few tutoring sessions to do in the next 14 days (while in MI for 5 of those days) I found plenty of school work to do today. I cleared off the kitchen table and set up my work station. I turned up the Greg Laswell station on Pandora, made a half pot of coffee, and started on my quest. I was surprised at the production, but still have so much to do. Here's to a Sunday afternoon to be spent at the kitchen table... tomorrow's music station still up for debate.

ahhhh! So, we took matters into our own hands and purchased....THE FURMINATOR!

We tested out the product last night and were amazed! Just look at the results.

What a crazy and unpredictable change of weather this week! On Monday we had 3.5 inches of snow and today temperatures soared into the 80's! It was a welcomed change and pleasant surprise from earlier this week. We definitely took advantage of it this afternoon!

I received the call yesterday, the tests went really well. The stem-cell donation/transplant is a go! Details are still pending, but we hope to be back to Michigan around March 20.

My trip home went really well. It was great to be back to my old stompin' grounds for the testing. I can't believe how much the hospital has changed since I worked there years ago. It was great to meet with the director of the blood center to put a plan into action and to answer questions.

I learned the patient is a 41 year old female with leukemia and lives in the United States, and is in remission. Her odds of survival without the transplant are zero and even with the transplant-odds are not necessarily in her favor.

She is on my mind daily. I find myself trying to grasp what she is feeling, thinking, and anticipating. I simply can't. all i can do is pray.

So, on that note....here's a glimpse into our life the past few [& crazy] days...

[FRIDAY] I returned home to Raleigh around 11pm. it was so good to see my husband: amazing how much you can miss your soul mate after a mere 48 hours.

[SATURDAY] thank goodness for sleeping in + naps
i was exhausted.
we celebrated Jim's birthday.
[it was tough keeping his gift [a wii fit] a secret-i couldn't wait till Sunday!]

what a riot. i was quickly reminded why i don't like to play video games with jim...

he dominates...all the time.

my wii fit age: 40....and seriously, NO! I do not trip over my feet when I walk...despite what the wii fit says.

[SUNDAY] a bitter cold and rainy day....a good day for naps, a little wii-fit, church and small group.

[MONDAY] 3.5 inches of SNOW! crazy, we woke up to a winter wonderland. snow day for Jim...back to work for me.

[TUESDAY] 2 hour delay for Jim for possible ice + day off for me = sleeping in. delightful. a day of getting caught up on laundry and cleaning.

so. life is good.

I'm still unsure of a lot of the details, but my flight is suppose to leave RDU @ 4:25 tomorrow afternoon...

The last few hours have been a whirlwind of emotions, activity, planning, organizing, phone-calling and praying.

...let me start from the beginning...

Years ago when working on peds oncology I donated blood and signed up to be on the National Bone Marrow Registry. Then this past fall I received a call that I may potentially be a match. I had more blood drawn and a few months later I received a letter informing me that at that time my stem cells were not needed.

Well, right before 5 today I learned otherwise...I'm a match for a 41 year old female who is in need of a stem-cell transplant as soon as possible.

They are flying me home THURSDAY [in 3 days!!!] for a physical/info session...and then again the middle of March for the stem cell donation.

I am humbled at this opportunity. I am thankful for understanding co-workers and manager. I am completely giddy to see my family...and I am amazed to see how God works.

-the women who will be receiving the stem cells: for her health and preparation
-the doctors involved
-safety in traveling back/forth to Michigan
-my health
-the details that still need to be figured out: particularly with our work schedules-and a peace of mind-knowing that God is in control.

The things I have taken from teaching...

I often get asked the question (from other, more veteran, teachers): What have you taken from teaching in these first couple of years?

Answering that question is quite difficult, because I have taken so much from my teaching experience so far.

However, some things that I have taken from teaching became evident to me this weekend. I was doing a little cleaning/consolidation while Emily was working the past couple of days when I came across these things. And those things are... pens! Yeah, that's right, pens. The picture should help explain.

Over the last 18 months, I have subconsciously accumulated about 40 pens from school.

It all started in my first ever IEP meeting a few weeks after I started teaching. I felt somewhat prepared for the meeting and had all my paperwork ready and a pen to take all my notes. However, as I passed around some paperwork that needed to be signed while still writing on some different paperwork, I realized I was the only one in the room with a pen. I had to stop my writing and pass my pen around. Ever since that day I have carried around 2 pens in my pocket throughout the day just in case I need to use one or lend one. It has become somewhat of a normal routine when I arrive at school. I get to school, unload my backpack (yes, my backpack... thanks Alan) and then I precede to open my desk drawer and grab those 2 coveted pens (albeit some mornings I would have to run down to the workroom to grab a couple more pens due to my original pens mysteriously disappearing... well, mysteriously until yesterday).

I guess some days I just forgot to take the pens out of my pocket and leave them at school. my bad.

I shall return the pens to school and hopefully they will stay there a little longer than in the past.

At least I finally have a quick answer for people when they ask me about what I have taken from teaching.

Maybe one of these days I'll share what, non-concrete, things I have taken from teaching.
