One Year HOME.

One year ago today we landed in Raleigh and walked off the plane as a family of three.
I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible little boy that has forever changed our lives (and taught us so much about joy, love & laughter).
Praise be to our God for making all things beautiful, in his time.

2 Years.

It's hard to believe that two years have passed since Mom went home to
Jesus.  Two years of great change and adjustment.  Two years of challenges and great joys.  Two years of letting go and embracing life here on earth without her.

It isn't the same.

The pain is still so real.

Yet, there is joy...and memories...and laughter in midst of the tears.

And, we can't forget (nor do we want to) the other life changing occurrence that happened on that memorable day. It was also on the same day, one year later, that we boarded a plane to be reunited with our son.  The memories bittersweet as we sat at the airport, overflowing with excitement, yet stricken with grief with memories of what happened exactly 365 days prior.

It is no coincidence that August 21 is marked with such pain and deep joy.
I fully believe it's the work of our Father...making all things His time.

So, in memory of mom we went out for breakfast before Jim went to work.  We "celebrated" Mom's homecoming with (Ethiopian) coffee...and with tear filled eyes we rejoiced that she is healed. With waffles, biscuits, and Moses' personal favorite, yogurt & granola, we looked at our son with an abundance of gratitude.

God is good...and still at work.
I'm beyond grateful the our story doesn't end here...

Until next time,
Grace & peace.

Zoo Days

The Zoo!
(another family first!)
Moses reaction to the snakes..
my thoughts, exactly, son...

The carousel was a favorite!

Intently watching "Raffie"

Another carousel ride to the end the day.
We came home and roasted hotdogs and s'mores over the fire.
So much fun.
(and this little guy LOVES roasted marshmallows!)
Summer, we're so glad you're here.

We have been eagerly waiting to take Moses to Marbles Children Museum. We finally had the perfect opportunity last week. So we packed up our little fam (and a friend) and headed out for an evening of fire truck rides, pirate ship adventures, pizza making, fishing, train playing...and so much more! It was a riot to see his imagination come alive.  Here are a few of my favorite pictures that captured our night out...

Call me "Prince"

Prince your biggest fan.

Batting practice happens daily...and it's complete with base running and a slide into "home ". All the while he summons to his crowd to cheer, "Go Prince, go!!!"

(A huge thanks to Aunt Mickey for the amazing jersey!!!!)

We're getting excited to take Moses to his first game at Comerica Park in July!!!

In honor of him

We celebrated Father's Day the best way we know how...with friends, an ice cream cake, sparklers and lots of laughter.

What an honor (& pure joy) to watch James as a dad. We love you!!!

Sweet Summertime.

We are loving summer over here! For the first time in six years Jim is off from work for the summer (and I had the last week off!). We soaked in the rays, relaxed, and laughed a lot!

Here is a glimpse of our summer so far. Check back soon for pictures of Moses' first adventures to the children's museum AND the zoo!!!

Moses loves the water!

Fresh from our garden

Sweet moments before a mommy & moses run.

Early morning bike ride
After my mom passed away, I vowed to always plant a hydrangea bush (which were her favorite) in our yard, in her memory.
The blooms were beautiful this year.

Swimming at the YMCA.
He's made incredible progress!

His favorite Tiger: Prince Fielder.
He now asks us to call him, "Prince" when he plays ball.
He practices batting and base running, a lot.
It's quite comical.
(Jim is so proud).
Growing up so fast.

YES, summer is here!!!!

Happy "Meetcha Day", Moses!

May 24 marked one year since we met Moses. In celebration we enjoyed Ethiopian food and reminisced with pictures from that incredible day.

It's hard to believe it's been a year since we
held him for the first time.

We've come so far.
He is an incredible blessing.
His laughter is contagious and his heart is so big.
Beyond thankful we get the privilege to be his parents.

We love you Moses Kai!!!

He earned his wings.

On May 16 Moses and I flew home for Sarah's college graduation. I'm so thankful we could be there to celebrate. Sarah lived life to the fullest the last four years. She fully embraced the journey. She soared academically and she stayed standing when the trials of this life rocked our family to it's knees. She is incredible and I admire her more than she'll ever know. I am so thankful we could witness the momentous event.

While in Michigan we were able to spend time with family (and meet our newest nephew/cousin-Charlie!!!!). I'm so grateful we could take part in the many celebrations (graduation parties, open houses and a birthday party!).

However, it was a bittersweet trip and I found myself stricken with grief more times than I care to admit. "Home" isn't the same without my mom's arms to greet us. The void is great and so much more real when we gather as a family.

"Home" also brings memories to light. Memories of what use to be and a reminder of what is no longer.

Yet, even in the hard moments I am thankful. Thankful that God is enough...and nothing is too big or too messy for him. I'm thankful for the sweet life of little ones. I have two new nephews, Charlie and Henry! (Congrats Courtney & BJ and Rachael & Scott..and Bryan, too!) I am thankful Moses could spend time with his cousins, finding bugs & digging in the sandbox. I'm thankful for just "being" with family.

We're already looking forward to returning in July! See you then, West Michigan!
