in God's country

Words to recap this past weekend:

simply amazing.

We went to the Blue Ridge Mountains with my parents, who were in town for a long weekend. The air was crisp, the view breath-taking, and our quaint little cabin was just right. We played games around the fireplace-sipping on hot apple cider, with sweaters on and swaddled in afghans. We munched [a lot!] on chocolate chip cookies and goodies of the like. We grilled out, did some shopping and simply enjoyed the change of scenery and change of pace. We went site seeing and made stops at Blowing Rock, Boone, and Grandfather's Mountain. We were surrounded by incredible views of the mountains and the changing colors of fall.

Here are a few pictures of our weekend get away.

Surprises in the mail

I have to write a quick blog due to the fact that Emily and I received a great package in the mail the other day. Everyone loves to get mail... when it is from friends or family, but packages are on a level of their own.

Thursday Evening, after returning from the Y, I decided to check the mail. In our mailbox was a key (a key used for opening the bigger mailboxes that could hold packages). Having made an ebay purchase a couple days before, I was like "wow, that was extremely fast shipping." However, it was not my ebay item... it was way better. It was a package from (drum roll please)... my sister Kristin. Now, for those of you who do not really know Kristin, well that's just too bad. If you do know Kristin, you know that whenever you see her return address on a card or a package, your day is about to get a whole lot better. And of course, she did not disappoint with this package either. Here is what we opened up to....

Yes, the package was stuff full of candy, movies, a card and of course..... she couldn't leave Bentley out on the splendor! Here is what Bentley got... I think he is now discovering the day changing ability of Kristin.

Basically, we just wanted to say thank you Kristin you made our day... I would say your made our week, but I tracked out the following day. I guess your package and tracking out would tie for the making of our week... well, at least mine.

THANKS AGAIN. much love.

This past week flew, here at 10pm on Sunday we are posting pictures from a week ago. oh, where does time go?

We took Bent hiking for the first time last week Sunday. It was perfect weather and a riot with the pup.

Here my week in short recaps known as highlights:

1. it is the end of the work week... for the both of us, which means a weekend off together.
2. ice cream social at school and my students "attacking me."
3. church picnic... meeting new people, playing a little football, four square and many laughs with the youth.
4. a student bringing in a slap bracelet! (yeah, I took it from her and wore it for the class period).
5. actually getting an IEP meeting scheduled for the day it truly needed to be on.
6. beef stir fry for dinner.
7. lime fluff! (one thing emily made for the church picnic. it was better known as "the green stuff," but it was gone by the end of the night).
8. the many laughs provided by my students (one example: a group is working on worksheets... a student finishes, he says "I'm finished dad...uh, mr. hapner). hilarious!
9. our thermoelectric cooler being delivered.
10. cool crisp mornings.
11. october baseball! (plus, the cubs are down in their series 0-2).

13. one of my classes writing "mr. hapner rocks" all over my whiteboard when I was in the hall talking to another teacher.
14. finding a gas station that actually had gas on the 3rd attempt.
15. discovering "fall for you" by secondhand serenade.
16. hearing evan "talk" on the phone.
17. free doughnuts and bagels leftover from a student council meeting.
18. my two 4th grade students having an amazing debate about the gold rush! maybe its just because I'm a teacher, but I thought it was the coolest thing.
